"Authentic Tibetan Culture now survives in exile and a few places like Mustang which have long historical and cultural ties with Tibet...."
- His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama
Introduction
The Kingdom of Mustang politically belongs to Nepal though its culture originated from Tibet. It lies to the north of the Himalayas on the 'roof of the world'. Due to the remote location it can only be reached on foot (or horse). As a result of closure of the borders to Tibet in 1959 the cultural ties to this country, to which it belongs culturally, were broken. This poses a risk to the preservation of Mustang's cultural heritage and language.
