School - General information - Purpose and Goals
The population of Mustang speaks the Tibetan language and practices the Buddhist religion. Teachers of the Nepalese school system are of the Hindu religion and speak only Nepalese. This causes communication problems between teachers and children which are most pronounced at school entry. It also causes a decline of the cultural identity of the children.

Lama Ngawang Kunga Bista opened the 'Tsechen Tharpaling Institute' in May 2000 to teach young people of all social groups. His aim was to teach the Tibetan language, Tibetan cultural values and English free of charge in daily evening classes. Due to great demand he founded the day and boarding school 'Great Compassion Boarding School' (GCBS) in the same year.

GCBS is committed to a policy of equal opportunity for all the students- that no student on the ground of age, race, religion, ancestry or disability, shall be excluded from participation, be denied the benefit of, or be otherwise subjected to discrimination under any programme or activity of this institution. Under this policy the school actively encourages the enrolment of interested students. There is no ethnic or caste discrimination in this school. GCBS aims at providing an all-round education with the objective to prepare children to face life's events with moral dignity to become useful and loyal citizens of the country. Next>>
